What Matrescence Means

Matrescence is the unfolding of motherhood - a sacred, transformative passage that reaches far beyond the physical. It’s the transition to motherhood in all its complexity: physical, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual.
Just as adolescence marks the shift from childhood to adulthood, matrescence marks the transition into motherhood symbolising a time of growth, identity change, and deep transformation.
At Matrescence Birthing Centres Gold Coast, we don’t reduce this experience
to medical milestones or clinical checklists. We honour it. We support women through the full arc of pregnancy, from the first appointment through to six
weeks postpartum and beyond, because birth is only the beginning.

Why Matrescence Was Created

Despite growing demand for natural, physiological, midwifery-led care, families on the Gold Coast have had limited access to licensed private birthing options. Public birth centres can be limited and oversubscribed. Private hospitals often offer clinical safety but lack continuity, holistic support, and birth environments that respect the natural, physiological process.

Matrescence Birthing Centres Gold Coast was created to offer an alternative: a licensed private birth centre, grounded in woman-led care, that brings together clinical safety and holistic support under one roof. Our goal is to support natural, spontaneous birth in a calm, spa-like sanctuary - without epidurals, inductions, instrumental or surgical intervention. Your care is grounded within the continuity of care by your midwife (or one of our centre-endorsed midwives) and the multidisciplinary collaboration of our team. We’re proud to be the only licensed, midwifery-led Level 2 facility of our kind in Queensland.

How We Work

Our care model centres around continuity with your own private midwife, or one of our centre-endorsed midwives, supported by a trusted team of allied health professionals, educators and credentialed doctors.

Through our licensed co-admission model, your midwife leads your care, with oversight from one of our supportive medical practitioners and specialist doctors when clinically indicated. This model protects both continuity and safety, and allows your care to remain eligible for private health insurance rebates.
Our birthing suites are designed to promote calm and oxytocin flow with sensory design, warm lighting, deep water birth options and space to move freely.

Every element of our space, care team and process has been created to walk beside women through their pregnancy, birth and postpartum experience.

We support physiological, undisturbed birth.

A Gift for Your Journey

Our bespoke birth planner helps you look beyond the delivery room to design the support system you need for your entire journey. It is a space to reflect on what matters most to you as you prepare to meet your baby.

There is no right or wrong way to complete it. Simply explore each section gently and write what feels meaningful, supportive, and true for you.

Our Founder’sVision

Matrescence Birthing Centres Gold Coast was founded by Shellanda - an endorsed midwife, a mother, and a passionate advocate for physiological,
woman - led care.

Shellanda created this birthing sanctuary in response to the lack of licensed, holistic birthing options on the Gold Coast, offering a space that honours natural, physiological birth, continuity of care, and the full journey into motherhood.

Shellanda’s vision was to create a centre that doesn’t just care for women during labour, but supports the full unfolding of motherhood ‘matresence’ before, during, and long after birth.

“This birthing centre is the realisation of that vision”

- Shellanda Eller
